ICAR-NRC on Seed Spices Organize Farmers Training on Organic Production Technology of Seed Spices for Sikkim
ICAR-NRC on Seed Spices and ICAR-National Organic Farming Research Institute organized collaborative farmers training on Organic Production Technology of Seed Spices for Sikkim during Dec. 16-17, 2016 at Gangtok. In the inaugural session of two days farmers training on organic production technology of seed spices for Sikkim Dr. G Lal, Director, ICAR- National Research Centre on Seed Spices, Tabiji, Ajmer, Rajasthan in his presidential address appraised about importance of seed spices for farmers. He informed that since ancient time India has been leading producer, exporter and consumer of seed spices in the world. India is having monopoly in export of seed spices. For last two to three years contribution of India is increasing in export of seed spices. Dr. Lal appraised that seed spices are also having very good medicinal importance. In the welcome address Dr. R. S. Mehta, Principal Scientist (Agronomy), NRCSS, Ajmer, told that seed spices are seeds of annual plants which add taste and aroma in dishes. He also pointed out that seed spices are normally grown in Rabi season can be introduced in Sikkim in the existing cropping systems. Dr. R.K. Avasthe, Joint Director, ICAR- National Organic Farming Research Institute was the Chief Guest of Inaugural function of the two-day farmers training organised by ICAR-NRCSS, Ajmer on16-17, December, 2016 at ICAR- NOFRI, Sikkim under Tribal Sub Plan programme of Govt of India. Dr. Avasthe, in his speech pointed out that Sikkim is the first organic state in our country and playing leading role in movement of organic farming in our country. Dr. Avasthe also highlighted that seed spices being low volume and high value crops have very good possibility of organic production. In the training programme 60 farmers from different districts of Sikkim participated. Scientists of ICAR-NRCSS, Ajmer and ICAR-NOFRI, Sikkim delivered lectures on different aspect of organic seed spice production technology. Dr. G. Lal delivered lecture on different value added products of seed spices. He advised farmers the ways and means of enhancing value of seed spices by preparing different value added products. Dr. R.S. Mehta imparted training on organic production technology of seed spices in Sikkim and different seed spice based cropping systems. Dr. Mehta advised farmers that coriander and fenugreek can be grown for leafy purpose as intercropping with different orchards. Dr. R. S. Meena, Sr. Scientist (Plant breeding), NRCSS, imparted training on different varieties and technology of seed production of seed spices. Dr. N.K. Meena, Sr. Scientist (Entomology), NRCSS, delivered lecture on insect pest and disease management in seed spices by using different organic methods. Dr. R.K. Avasthe, Dr Raghavendra Singh and other scientists from NOFRI, Sikkim also delivered lectures on various aspects of seed spice production. On second day of the training valedictory function was organised. In the valedictory function, mini demonstrations on seed spices, training certificate were also given to the participants. In the valedictory function some farmers expressed their views and satisfaction on learning of organic seed spices production and promised to take up seed spices in some area. Dr. N. K. Meena and Dr. R. S. Meena from NRC on Seed Spices, Ajmer and Dr. Raghavendra Singh, Sr. Scientist (Agronomy) and Sh. B. Lepcha, from NOFRI, Sikkim were the coordinators of the training. At the end of the training, vote of thanks was given by Dr. R.S. Meena.
